Koenigs set for trial this week
Trial began Monday, Aug. 4, for Mark W. Koenigs, the man accused of shooting Island businessperson Sue Normand.
Koenigs faces three charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm and a charge of aggravated battery with a firearm in connection with the Dec. 5, 2007, shooting in Holmes Beach.
Authorities maintain that Koenigs, of Bradenton Beach, waited for Island Mail & More in the Anna Maria Island Centre shopping center to open that morning. Normand, who owns the store, unlocked the door and several customers entered.
Koenigs allegedly entered carrying a box, which contained a gun.
Authorities maintain that Koenigs removed the gun from the box and intentionally shot Normand in the hip.
Three weeks ago, Normand filed a civil suit alleging that Koenigs accidentally - but negligently - fired the gun at her.
Koenigs was taken into custody about two miles away on the Gulf of Mexico shore in Bradenton Beach. He was shot three times by Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputies before he was apprehended.
The trial began Monday with jury selection, at the Manatee County Justice Center in Bradenton, although a number of law enforcement personnel scheduled to testify expected a possible postponement.
