The Newport Daily Express, Newport, Vt., held its 32nd member-guest tournament at the Newport Country Club July 24-25. Sixty teams competed in the two-day event with the winner, Jim Mixon, hailing from Holmes Beach. The close scoring that marked last week’s indoor soccer games changed dramatically as three out of the four games played July 26 and July 28 were blowout victories, including a 10-3 victory by Action Kawasaki Yamaha over previously undefeated Sparks Steel Art July 26.

Dylan Joseph and Michael Latimer led the way with three goals apiece, while Nico Colacci and Javier Solgado each finished with two goals.

Sparks Steel Art was led by two goals from Ryan Fellowes and one goal from Robbie Fellowes in the loss.

The second game of the evening saw Anna Maria Oyster Bar shut out Ross Built by a 6-0 score. Shelby Morrow and Sydney Cornell paced the Oyster Bar with two goals apiece, while Gillian Cassidy and Sydney Morrow each notched a goal in the victory.

Action Kawasaki Yamaha and Anna Maria Oyster Bar were locked in a 3-2 battle on July 28, but six second-half goals turned the game into a 9-4 blowout victory for Action Kawasaki Yamaha. Nico Colacci and Dylan Joseph scored three goals apiece while Javier Solgado finished with two goals for Action, who also received one goal from Zach Stewart in the victory.

Sydney Morrow led Anna Maria Oyster Bar with two goals, while Shelby Morrow and Gillian Cassidy each finished with one goal in the loss.

Sparks Steel Art got back on track in the second game of the evening, defeating Ross Built 3-2 behind one goal apiece from Robbie Fellowes, Lane Bowers and Ryan Fellowes.

Joe Rogers and Aiden Grumley each notched a goal for Ross Built in the loss.

Adult football

The standings are really tight in the NFL adult flag football league at the Anna Maria Island Community Center, which should make for some exciting playoff action. With one more week remaining in the regular season, only one game separates first place from last place.

In the AFC, the Jaguars, who started the season with two consecutive losses, find themselves on top of the conference after defeating the quickly fading Bills 26-22. Quarterback Jason Sato threw for 150 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Scott Rudacille to lead the Jaguar attack. Rudacille finished with 96 receiving yards and added a pair of extra points. Dustin Swain added two touchdowns and finished with 99 yards on offense.

Scott Dell passed for 209 yards to lead the Bills, which also received 107 receiving yards and a touchdown from Brian Moorhead in the loss.

The Bucs won a third straight game, a 30-12 decision over the Giants behind 205 passing yards and two touchdowns from quarterback David Johnston. Scott Eason with 94 receiving yards and Shawn Kaleta with 61 receiving yards led the Bucs on offense. Robbie Bennett added an interception return for a touchdown to seal the victory for the Bucs.

Tyler Bekkerus passed for 218 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Giants. One touchdown pass went to Jeremy Jackson, who finished with 86 receiving yards, while Emily King added the other touchdown for the Giants.

Kevin Austin, Robert Cornell and John Pace each threw one touchdown pass, while Mike Walter added a pair of touchdown receptions and an extra point to lead the Broncos past the Vikings 20-12. Brent Moss chipped in with a touchdown reception, while Shandi Austin added an extra point and 22 receiving yards in the victory.

The Vikings were led by Paul Kurtz’s 162 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns. Phelps Tracy was on the receiving end of one touchdown and finished with 67 receiving yards, while Jordan Pritchard hauled in the other Viking touchdown in the loss.

Speaking of football

Youth tackle football teams started up practices in preparation of the upcoming season at the Police Athletic League or PAL. The PAL Bears JV team is well represented with Islanders this season, including Brad Duffman, George Lardas, Keegan Murpy, Jacob Talucci, Andrew Zink and Seth Walter participating.

The team is practicing four nights a week at Bayshore High School under the watchful eyes of their coaches, adult flag football teammates Kevin Austin, Rob Cornell and Mike Walter.

Horseshoe news

Steve Doyle and Jeff Moore were the only team to emerge from pool play with three victories and were the day’s outright champs during July 31 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City hall horseshoe pits. The team of Debbie Rhodes and Hank Huyghe edged the team of Sam Samuels and Bill Nelson 21-17 to take home second place.

Sam Samuels — walking team of one — was the only team to earn three victories during pool play and was the day’s outright champion at the July 27 horseshoe games.

Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
