Holmes Beach man dies after motorcycle crash
|Mike Cagnina, 23
Mike Cagnina of Holmes Beach was in the motorcycle repair business before injuries he received in a crash while riding a motorcycle Jan. 24 in Holmes Beach resulted in his death two days later.
Cagnina, 23, was riding a motorcycle when he apparently lost control of the vehicle in the 5300 block of Gulf Drive late Thursday evening. He was thrown from the bike, according to Holmes Beach Police Lt. Dale Stephenson, and taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.
He did not regain consciousness and died two days later on Saturday.
Cagnina was a Manatee County native, according to his father, John Cagnina. He was a Manatee High School graduate, grew up on the Island, and was a graduate and certified motorcycle mechanic of the American Motorcycle Institute in Ormand Beach, Fla., and also worked in construction.
“He had a way to make people laugh,” said his father.
“He had an effervescent personality. Michael was a free spirit, but as he got older, he was becoming more mature.”
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at Shannon Funeral Home Westview Chapel, 5610 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, in the sanctuary of Roser Memorial Community Church, 512 Pine Ave., Anna Maria. A reception will follow the Roser service in the church fellowship hall. Shannon Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
The family requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a special fund established with the Manatee Education Foundation, P.O. Box 9069, Bradenton FL 34206, with a notation “in memory of Mike Cagnina.” Those funds will then be designated to help with the special needs of youths with dyslexia.
He is survived by parents John and Carol Cagnina of Holmes Beach; two aunts, Dottie Surette of Largo, Fla., and Carmen Shea of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and “hundreds of cousins” and numerous close family members, according to his father.
