Bradenton Beach group OKs parking signs

A Bradenton Beach advisory committee wants the city to go international with its way-finding signs.

The ScenicWAVES advisory committee, meeting July 14 at city hall, recommended asking the city commission to authorize the installation of international signs directing motorists to parking spaces.

Committee members Connie Drescher and Pat Gentry, working with the city’s building and police departments, drafted a letter to the city commission.

The ScenicWAVES committee voted to pass the letter on to the city commission, asking to spend as much as $500 from the ScenicWAVES project fund for the new signs.

“It’s being suggested that the city use these signs for ease of recognition for visitors,” Drescher said, adding that the international parking signs basically show a “big P with an arrow.”

“I’ve seen them, they are really clear,” Drescher said. “This is going to be excellent.”

Drescher estimated that 20 signs would be needed to direct motorists to public parking at the beaches and in the commercial district.

City projects and programs manager Lisa Marie Phillips said the signs would cost about $20 each. “They have them ready made that we can just order,” she added.

In other business, the committee endorsed a final draft of a Trolley Up educational card, information to be placed on buses and in area businesses to help people travel to the Island and on the Island via public transportation.

Specifically the information is intended to encourage ridership on the fare-free Island trolley, which operates about every 20 minutes from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily from the Anna Maria City Pier to Coquina Beach.

People can reach the Island via Manatee County Area Transit’s free Beach Express on Sundays and holidays, as well as Bus 6 via Cortez Road and Route 3 via Manatee Avenue.

Also, the Island trolley now connects at Coquina Beach with a Longboat Key Trolley that travels to downtown Sarasota from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. The Longboat trolley fare is 75 cents one way.

The next ScenicWAVES meeting will take place at 3 p.m. Aug. 11 at city hall, 107 Gulf Drive N. Before the general meeting, at 2 p.m., the group’s parking subcommittee will meet.
