Islander Photo: Rick Catlin Construction of a new Key Royale Bridge in Holmes Beach - expected to start next week - has been delayed until August 1 by the Florida Department of Transportation, according to Mayor Carol Whitmore. At the same time, however, Florida Power and Light Co. said it will have to move some temporary electric lines from the bridge on Thursday, July 13, and Friday, July 14, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The bridge will have to be closed at least four times for about one hour each day during the five-hour period, said Mel Kline of FPL. "A lot depends on how things go" on Thursday, said Kline. "There are a lot of uncertainties." West Manatee Fire and Rescue will keep some staff and emergency vehicles on Key Royale during the closures.
