Up and away in Holmes Beach
Manatee County Emergency Medical Services personnel prepare a patient for Bayflite helicopter medical transport to the trauma center at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg Saturday, June 14. The medical emergency came about when a passenger, Benjamin Hampton, 32, of Cromwell, Ind., became agitated while seated in the vehicle in which the driver, Andrew Lavers, 37, of Palmetto was arrested for road rage. According to the Holmes Beach Police report, Hampton broke out the vehicle's windshield with his feet and was "so intoxicated that he was foaming at the mouth and slumped on the floorboard." EMS arrived and found Hampton to be comatose and called Bayflite for helicopter transport to a trauma center. Islander Photo: Bonner Joy

An apparent hit-and-run accident on June 14 in Holmes Beach resulted in the arrest of a motorist and the medical rescue of a passenger in his vehicle.

The patient was not injured in the vehicle accident, rather he was so intoxicated he was “foaming at the mouth” and slumped on the floorboard. He appeared “comatose,” according to the Holmes Beach Police Department report.

The incident, occurred at about 3:30 p.m. June 14 at the Kingfish Boat Ramp and resulted in charges of aggravated battery and hit-and-run against Andrew B. Lavers of Palmetto.

The hit and run allegedly took place in the 500 block of Manatee Avenue/State Road 64, where a driver in a white pickup truck traveling east swerved into the path of a driver in a black car, also traveling east.

HBPD officers found both vehicles at Kingfish Boat Ramp, just to the west of the Anna Maria Island Bridge.

They also encountered Lavers, according to the report, who “was walking hurriedly from the east end of the parking area” and “yelling ‘I’m gonna kill that son of a bitch.’”

An officer stopped Lavers to talk with him about the reported hit and run incident and Lavers said that a man had tried to run him off the road.

The officer interviewed the other man, also stopped at the boat ramp, and investigated on the road and concluded that Lavers had intentionally caused the accident.

Lavers was arrested for alleged aggravated battery with a motor vehicle and cited for reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

During the investigation of the accident, while taking Lavers into custody at the boat ramp, police also were involved in the medical evacuation of a passenger in Lavers’ truck.

The police reported stated, “While investigating the crash, I observed [Benjamin] Hampton place his feet against the inside of the windshield of Lavers’ vehicle and push the windshield outward, causing the windshield to crack.”

Another officer reported that “Hampton was so intoxicated he was foaming at the mouth and slumped into the floorboard of the truck.”

The man’s condition prompted police to request support from the Manatee County Emergency Medical Services. Hampton was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.
