Familiar names in Anna Maria elections

With the deadline for candidate qualifying at noon on Friday, June 20, a number of familiar Anna Maria names are gearing up for a run at one of the two city commission seats up for election in November. City Commissioner Duke Miller has already announced he will not seek a fourth term.

Incumbent Commissioner Jo Ann Mattick has qualified for a second term as well as political activist Mark Alonso.

While the mayor’s position is also up for election, only incumbent Fran Barford has announced her intention to run. If elected, it would be her second term.

Two former city commissioners, Chuck Webb and Bob Barlow, have obtained qualifying packets to run for city office. Barlow said he would be “seeking a seat on the city commission” while efforts to reach Webb to confirm his candidacy have been unsuccessful.

Webb served as a commissioner from 2002 to 2003, but did not seek re-election due to his growing legal practice, while Barlow was a commissioner from 2000 to 2001, but also did not seek re-election.

Barford’s opponent in the 2006 mayor’s race, Tom Turner, has obtained a candidate packet, but is not seeking the mayor’s slot in this election, merely considering a run for a commission seat.

“I haven’t made up my mind,” said Turner. “Most likely I’ll run, but I’ll wait until the last day before making my final decision.”

If no one else qualifies as a candidate for the mayor’s position, Barford will automatically be returned to office.

The qualifying period officially began Monday, June 16, and concludes at noon Friday, June 20.

Qualifying for Anna Maria candidates must be done at the Manatee County Supervisor of Elections Office, 305 15th St. W., Bradenton. For more information on qualifying requirements, interested candidates should go on the Internet to www.votemanatee.com.

Potential candidates in Anna Maria must have lived in the city for at least two years and be a registered voter of that city.

The office of mayor of Anna Maria pays $9,600 annually, while a city commissioner earns $4,800 per year.
