Key Royale closed after crash
A vehicle accident on Key Royale Drive Monday forced emergency personnel to close the road for much of the morning.
A gold convertible crashed into an electric pole in the 600 block of Key Royale Drive, knocking the pole at an angle and sending live electrical wires to the ground.
Details were not available regarding the cause of the crash, but the convertible seemed to have hit the pole head on.
As a precaution, the Holmes Beach Police Department closed the road.
West Manatee Fire Rescue District responded and assisted the driver, unidentified as of Islander press time. The motorist apparently did not suffer serious injury and was only taken to the hospital for observation.
Florida Power & Light also responded to the accident site to secure the pole and wires.
As the emergency crews worked at the scene, motorists waited to enter and exit Key Royale.
A number arriving to the area had plans to golf.
“I guess we don’t have a tee time anymore,” Bruce MacKenzie said as he sat in his idling Jeep waiting for the road to open.
On the other side of the accident scene, Mary Ellen Macy waited in her BMW. She was bound for the courthouse and an appointment with an attorney.
