St. Patrick's Day was kicked off Sunday with a parade in Holmes Beach, including Mayor Rich Bohenberger, Judy the elephant, Irish dancers, marching bands, bag pipers, green kids and balloons, dancers, dogs, a rolling Irish pub, a hula-hooping woman, shriners, an Irish Islander cartoonist and loads of candy and green beads for young and old. Anna Maria city commissioners at their March 12 meeting approved the first reading of an ordinance that would combine the Residential-2 zone with the Residential-1 zone, but agreed to modify the measure to allow all existing two-family residences to remain conforming uses.
The trial of two men charged in the April 17, 2008, Anna Maria home invasion involving former Anna Maria City Commissioner Linda Cramer is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. March 23 at the Manatee County Judicial Center.
