Commission to review cellular proposal
The Holmes Beach City Commission was expected to discuss a proposal for the installation of a new system of cellular antennas at its Tuesday, March 11, meeting.
The discussion was expected to take place during the commission’s work session following the 7 p.m. regular meeting at city hall, 5801 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach. The meeting will take place after The Islander went to press for the week.
Specifically the commission was to review a proposal from NextG Networks for access to the public right-of-way for telecommunications services.
The New York-based company sent Mayor Rich Bohnenberger a letter in late February indicated its interest in establishing antennas in the city to enhance network coverage for cellular and PCS providers.
The letter proposed a small network of antennas - “microcellular node sites” - attached to distribution poles and street lamps.
NextG said the smaller antennas are an alternative to the larger cellular towers that have been built and are used when “siting new macro facilities may prove to be impractical.”
“Visually unobtrusive, the equipment is small, concealed, and easy to install and maintain,” the letter stated.
