School races, party nominations on primary ballot

Island voters will head to the polls Tuesday, Aug. 24, to mark ballots for school board candidates in three races, as well as nominate candidates in state and federal races.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Anna Maria voters will cast ballots at Roser Memorial Community Church, 512 Pine Ave.

In Holmes Beach, voting will take place at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 248 S. Harbor Drive, and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 6608 Marina Drive.

And Bradenton Beach voters will cast ballots at Tingley Memorial Library, 111 Second St. N.

All the ballots will include non-partisan races for the Manatee County School Board, including:

  • Julie B. Aranibar, Albert G. Yusko and incumbent Jane Pfeilsticker in District 3.

  • Karen Carpenter and Jennifer Radebach in District 5.

  • David M. Bailey and incumbent Barbara A. Harvey in District 1.

School board members — there are five total — are elected at-large, but each is assigned to represent schools in a specific geographic area. Board member Bob Gause, whose term is up in 2012, represents District 4, which includes Anna Maria Elementary School.

Voters who take a Democratic ballot on primary day also will nominate for:

  • U.S. senator. The race includes Glenn A. Burkett, Maurice A. Ferre, Jeff Greene and Kendrick B. Meek.

U.S. representative. The race includes Rick Eaton and James T. Golden.

  • Governor. The race includes Brian P. Moore and Alex Sink.

  • Florida attorney general. The race includes Dave Aronberg and Dan Gelber.

Voters who take a Republican ballot also will nominate for:

  • U.S. senator. The race includes William Escoffery III, William Billy Kogut and Marco Rubio.

  • U.S. representative. The race includes Don Baldauf and incumbent Vern Buchanan.

  • Governor. The race includes Mike McCalister, Bill McCollum and Rick Scott.

  • Florida attorney general. The race includes Holly Benson, Pam Bondi and Jeff Kottkamp.

The general election, which includes the non-partisan races in Island cities, will take place Nov. 2.
