Anna Maria settles roof lawsuit
Anna Maria city commissioners have voted to accept $75,000 from Roof USA as a mediated settlement in the city’s lawsuit against the company for a faulty roof installation during the summer of 2006.
The settlement was negotiated by attorney Mark Nelson, who represented the city against Roof USA.
Anna Maria filed suit against Roof USA for mold and asbestos remediation damages caused by water flooding city hall from the roof that was under construction in August 2006.
The city claimed that a covering that Roof USA used over its roof installation failed during a heavy rainstorm Aug. 6, 2006, causing an extensive amount of water to flood into city hall. This resulted in a considerable amount of water and mold damage to the interior of city hall.
In order to effect repairs, the city had to temporarily relocate to the Island Baptist Church for several months.
The city lawsuit asked Roof USA to pay the city’s relocation costs, in addition to actual damages to city hall.
The total amount of the claim against Roof USA was in excess of $100,000.
