11:30 a.m. - The Longboat Key/Lido Key/St. Armands Chamber of Commerce hosts a nooner luncheon at the Sun House Restaurant, 111 Gulf Drive S., Bradenton Beach: Information: 941- 383-2466.

8 p.m. - “Second Time Around” opens at the Island Players playhouse at Gulf Drive and Pine Avenue in Anna Maria. The play continues Tuesdays through Saturdays to Oct. 21. Information: 941-778-6878.

5:30 p.m. - The Anna Maria Island Art League ushers in its fall season with its annual faculty exhibit, which opens with a reception at its gallery, 5312 Holmes Blvd., Holmes Beach. Information: 941-778-2099.

 

Saturday, Oct. 13

8 a.m. - The Anna Maria Island Privateers smoke mullet in the Publix parking lot, 3900 E. Bay Drive, Holmes Beach. The sale lasts until all the fish are sold. Information: www.amiprivateers.org or call 941-720-0426.

8:30 a.m. - The Kiwanis Club of Anna Maria Island meets for a program and breakfast at Cafe on the Beach at Manatee Public Beach, 4000 Gulf Drive, Holmes Beach. Information: 941-778-7823.

8:30 a.m. - Volunteers are invited to help plant the salt marsh habitat at Robinson Preserve. Organizers stress that volunteers should “dress to get wet” at the preserve, 1690 99th St. N.W., Bradenton. Information: 941-748-4501, ext. 4605.

5:30 p.m. - Mote Marine Aquarium, 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway, Sarasota, hosts a presentation with Dr. Michael Orbach on climate change. Information: 941-338-4441, ext. 473.

  • The Anna Maria Island Community Center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria, offers a range of courses for adults and children Mondays through Saturdays, including cooking, dance, fitness and art classes.   • Mote Marine Aquarium holds Sharktoberfest throughout October, featuring a variety of programs and presentations. Each child with a paying adult is admitted free and receives a treat bag. Information: www.mote.org or 941-388-4441.
  • Anne Abgott is the “Artist of the Month” at the Island Gallery West, 5368 Gulf Drive, Holmes Beach, through October. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. For more information, call 941-792-1039.
  • The Village of the Arts - located between Ninth and 14th streets west and Ninth and 17th avenues west in Bradenton - holds art walks on the first Fridays and first Saturdays of the month. Information: 941-720-2775.
  • On the second and fourth Mondays of the month at 9 a.m., the widowed persons support group meets at the Anna Maria Island Community Center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria. Information: 941-778-1908.
  • The Studio at Gulf and Pine, 10101 Gulf Drive, Anna Maria, hosts “Conversations at the Studio” Wednesdays at 5 p.m. The Studio also hosts “A Sense of Place” photography exhibit through November, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Information: 941-778-1906.
  • On the last Saturday of each month, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 82 hosts a basic “America’s Boating Course” in the Buchanan Room at Mote Marine Aquarium, 1600 Ken Thompson Pkwy., Sarasota. Information: 941-358-2068. Fee applies.
  • On the second Saturday of each month, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 82 holds a “GPS for Mariners Course” at 10 a.m. at the Mote Marine Keating Center, Mote Marine Aquarium, 1600 Ken Thompson Pkwy., Sarasota. Information: 941-358-2068. Fee applies.
  • Mondays and Thursdays through Oct. 25, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 82 hosts a “Boating Skills and Seamanship Course” at the Mote Marine Keating Center, 1600 Ken Thompson Pkwy., Sarasota. Information: 941-358-2068. Fee applies.

  • On Oct. 19-20, the annual Bayfest, organized by the Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce, takes place in Anna Maria on Pine Avenue. The Friday night hours are 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and the Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Islander’s dog costume contest opens the festival on Oct. 20. Information: 941-778-1541.
  • Roll up the sleeve. The Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce hosts a health clinic Oct. 23, during which flu shots and pneumonia shots will be given. Information 941-778-1541. Fee applies.

  • On Nov. 9, the Island arts community partners for theIsland Art Walk, which takes place at the Island Gallery West, Artists Guild of Anna Maria Island, Anna Maria Island Art League, Restless Native, Essence of Time and The Islander newspaper in Holmes Beach and the Studio at Gulf and Pine in Anna Maria.   • On Nov. 10, the Anna Maria Island Community Center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria, will celebrate its grand opening with the public. Information: 941-778-1908.
  • On Dec. 7, the Holmes Beach merchants host the annual “Downtown Holiday” celebration with visits from Santa and the Anna Maria Island Privateers, as well as music, refreshments and shopping in the Gulf and Marina drives area.
  • The Anna Maria Island Art League’s Winterfest takes place Dec. 8-9 in Holmes Beach at the field next to city hall. Information: 941-778-2099.
