Anna Maria commission has heavy agenda tomorrow

The Anna Maria City Commission may be in for some overtime at its Jan. 26 regular meeting.

Commission Chairperson John Quam has placed a number of important items on the agenda for discussion and/or a vote, including the second reading of the proposed coastal overlay district ordinance that would govern new construction within the district boundaries.

Lawyers for some affected property owners have already implied the city would likely face legal action if it passes the ordinance.

But the city has requested a second legal opinion before it passes the measure and attorney Nancy Stroud of Boca Raton was hired by the commission to review the ordinance. Commissioners at their Jan. 12 meeting indicated they might not have the final reading of the ordinance on Jan. 26, just a discussion of Stroud’s opinion, which is expected before the meeting.

Sandbar/community center site plans

Also on the agenda will be a discussion on granting the Sandbar restaurant an extension for submission of its final site plan. The restaurant missed the Dec. 29 submission deadline and has asked the commission for an extension.

The commission is also scheduled to review the final site plan for the proposed expansion of the Anna Maria Island Community Center.

Signage

The commission will have the final reading and vote on a revised sign ordinance at its Jan. 26 meeting after hearing recommended changes in the ordinance from City Planner Alan Garrett on Jan. 12.

Most of the changes in the ordinance were directed at real estate signs advertising "for sale" or "for rent," and the ordinance would reduce the maximum size of a real estate "open house" sign from 5 square feet to 3 square feet, among other changes.

Line of credit

After nearly 2 1/2 years of work, the commission appears ready to establish a $1.5 million line of credit with Wachovia Bank under a program funded by the Florida Association of Counties.

The commission approved the first reading Jan. 12 and the final reading is planned for Jan. 26.

If approved, the line of credit would only be for drainage and road projects approved by the commission.
