New year brings new opportunity

Islander Kevin Hewson has taken his vow for the new year - to spend more time relaxing.

Islander Anna Mae Rice has taken her vow for 2008 - to read a book a month.

And Islander Helen Thackery has taken her vow - to shed some unwanted weight around her home and on her body. “My resolution is I want to lighten my load, so to speak,” Thackery said last Wednesday, as she browsed the book shelves at the Island Branch Library in Holmes Beach.

Island nonprofit groups and businesses are prepped as 2008 begins to cater to those resolving to change lives and lifestyles.

For those seeking a mellower year, yoga instructor Joan Dickinson will conduct a free introductory class in meditation and yoga at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at Island Yoga Space, 9805 Gulf Drive, second floor, Anna Maria.

Also, the Friends of the Island Library will host Melissa Steartz of the Blissful Garden Day Spa at the library, 5701 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach. Steartz’ free talk and demonstration on massage therapy will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14.

For those seeking to battle back the signs of aging, Tricia Graziano will conduct a free demonstration on “natural anti-aging methods” at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Island Chiropractic Center, 3612 E. Bay Drive, Holmes Beach.

For those seeking to trim and tone their bodies, the Anna Maria Island Community Center will offer a variety of fitness classes beginning this month.

Meanwhile, for those seeking to improve their skills on the water, the Anna Maria Island Power Squadron will hold a two-session Boat Smart class this month. The sessions will take place at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, and Saturday, Jan. 19, at 1200 71st St. N.W., Bradenton. The group also will present several seminars, one on knots at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, one on GPS at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, and two on charts - 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, and Thursday, Jan. 17.

And, for those seeking to channel their creative energy, the new year also brings a new lineup of classes at the Anna Maria Island Art League, 5312 Holmes Blvd., Holmes Beach. The winter/spring schedule, which begins Monday, Jan. 7, includes adult classes in acrylic painting, basic drawing, stained glass, basket weaving, pottery, oil painting and watercolors. Children’s classes include clayworks, arts and crafts, drawing and painting and black-and-white photography.
